HAVE MEDICAID OR CHIP COVERAGE?

Get Ready to Renew: Step by Step Toolkit

You will need to renew your Medicaid every year through a process called redetermination.

Here is what you need to do:

1. Visit abe.illinoise.gov and click Manage My Case:

    • Verify your contact information: Update your mailing address under the Contact Us tab.
    • Check your redetermination date: Everybody’s redetermination due date is different. Check yours under the Benefit Details tab.

2. Watch your mail for a letter from the Department of Human Services (DHS)

    • If you get medical benefits and SNAP and/or cash assistance, the letter comes every 6 months.
    • If you have only medical benefits, the letter comes once a year.

3. When you receive the letter, complete your renewal form right away and return it with any supporting information attached by the due date shown on the letter.

4. Set reminders when it is time to renew:

    • Opt-in for text and email alerts in the Account Management tab at abe.illinoise.gov
    • Set reminders in your calendar.

5. Keep all your Medicaid/CHIP renewal documents together.

NO LONGER ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICAID/CHIP?

If you are no longer eligible for Medicaid or CHIP, it is important to quickly get other health insurance to avoid a lapse in coverage. You have 60 days to apply and enroll in new coverage after your Medicaid coverage ends. This is known as the Special Enrollment period.

    • Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance: You can ask your employer if health insurance is offered.
    • Health Insurance Marketplace: You can apply and enroll in a Marketplace plan. Visit getcovered.illinois.gov to shop for quality, affordable coverage.
    • Reapply for Medicaid: If your circumstances change and you meet the eligibility criteria, you can reapply for Medicaid and CHIP anytime. The enrollment is open year-round.
      • If you lost Medicaid eligibility because you didn’t complete the renewal process, you have 90 days to get your coverage reinstated if you complete the renewal and are determined eligible.

Even if you’re no longer eligible for Medicaid, your child still may be eligible for Medicaid or CHIP. Your ineligibility does not necessarily translate to your entire household.

To ensure you receive the best care and support throughout the year:

  • Connect with your health plan and care coordinator frequently.
  • Stay informed: Know your value-added benefits and check for updates regularly
